Current WTA Tour World Rankings Top 25 with points, d.o.b with previous ranking, comprehensive is not the word. These results are hot off the press and out today 6 July. Serena Williams is still currently ranked World No2, but in our opinion is World No1 at this present moment in time and grabs the headline and main photo for this article. The Championships - Wimbledon 2009 Day Twelve

Further details and the reasoning behind that statement follows after the WTA Ranking Table and it makes interesting reading. Maria Sharapova has been included as she has a huge following  and on this site, she’s currently 59 or joint 60th depending on listing……………unchanged, to be expected after her recent comeback from a serious shoulder injury. But the whole world is watching this lady, there is supreme ability here, not to mention she’s a bit of a stunner,  just at present she is lacking form but she can only get better……fast!

A few words on this WTA Ranking mainly backed by some thoughts from Serena Williams in the media over the weekend and today in the papers. She has expressed some strong views on the current ranking and points system and we are inclined to agree on this, here’s  her view taken from the Metro.

“If you hold three grand slam titles, maybe you should be No1, but not on the WTA Tour. I’d rather be No2 and hold three grand slams than be No1 and not have any!.”

You could say this is a very indirect double edged pop at Dinara Safina and the WTA, one based on a solid track record bar some injuries earlier this season. With Serena Williams some 1600 points behind Safina to put things in perspective she would have to win the next big event the US Open and Dinara Safina would have to get knocked out roundabout the first/second round for any hope of making up this huge points gap even then its questionable which does start to raise some question marks on the whole points rating system, maybe a weighting for grand slams would be an idea!

With Serena Williams her main focus now is not on points, WTA Rankings, and being the official World No1 on points, she is now going beyond the Numbers game and is entering a different realm and is looking towards “Greatness” and not many people have that honour. The All Time Tennis Hall of Fame is her next goal, the US open will be the event, by equalling the Legendary Billie Jean King and her 12 World Grand slam Titles as Serena current holds 11,  this is what Serena had to say about this:

“It’s just now I’m Looking at the next goal of someone like Billie Jean King, who is completely my idol. To get to her level and have 12 would be even better” Metro

Serena now is No7 in the all time Tennis List, she also had this to say.

“I’m Really just playing for me, whether I’m the greatest or not. I Can’t even put myself in a sentence with the greatest, because I think of people like Martina Navaratilova, Steffi Graf and Billie Jean King. They were such great champions. To be even mentioned with those people is a real honour to me. I feel like I’m really young…..” Metro

Looks like the US Open is the next big thing for Serena Williams and in our opinion only one thing can stop her winning  based on current performances and form and thats her sister Venus Williams, just can’t see anything else out their stopping her bar injuries, but this is tennis and anything can happen, maybe Dinara Safina will pull out all the stops??. Even if Serena  doesn’t win the US open,  there is always the Australian Open and then she’s still young, there’s always next season, and the one after that, and the one after that ………………….!
