An American sister v sister match in the Wimbledon Women’s 2009 Singles  finals on Day 12, and with the added bonus of being played on 4th July American Independence Day, this was something that had to be won with guaranteed huge headlines for the winner.

In what could have turned out to be another long haul match lasting hours Serena Williams beat her elder sister Venus in 2 sets 7-6 (3), 6-2 and convincingly to win her third Wimbledon championship.

It could be argued a surprise win by Serena as she can play on grass but its Venus who truly shines and who has done so throughout this tournament and has won Wimbledon 5 times and she was aiming for her third succesive win, but it was not to be at Wimbledon 2009, and it ended up as Serena’s day and she claims the crown.

Serena seemed to look the dominant player throughout the match and increasingly so near the closing stages and managed to have Venus struggling to cover the court from Serena’s strong returns. At the end of the match Serena acknowledged the Victory but it was tainted by beating her sister and stopping her achieving her third succsive win, a bitter sweet victory are the words that spring to mind. Once the Venus Rose Bowl Wimbledon 2009 Championship was glistening in her hands though,  Victory was Sweet and the crowd acknowledged her victory.

Serena continues the family affair with winning Wimbledon this decade with The Williams sisters having combined wins for eight singles titles at Wimbledon this decade, with only Maria Sharapova  in 2004 and Amelie Mauresmo in 2006 able to stop the Williams winning streak.

After a tense match they are expected back  on Centre Court in a matter of hours for their doubles final against Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs , looking to make this  their fourth title together at Wimbledon.

Still two Grand slams left in the season but The Williams sisters look to be very cleverly reaching peak form for the events that matter, its now a question of barring injuries or health problems, is there anybody out there capable of beating this duo at present?
