Strong feelings of Deja Vu here, can’t think why but, Serena Williams and Venus Williams are through to the Wimbledon Finals, a repeat of 2008 and there’s nothing like keeping these things in the family. Very tight odds on who will win this final but lets take a look at who they both beat.
Very interesting set up in the Womens 2009 Semi Finals, not only was it the Top Four Seeded and World Ranked players that made it to the top four players in the semi final stages but also it was a perfect draw of America v Russia in each semi final match and was being billed by the media as a battle of the superpowers.
Semi Final No 1. Venus Williams V Dinara Safina Match Details:

This is the second year straight for Venus to enter the Wimbledon Finals and her third on record. She won it last year, has played consistently throughout the event this year and she really does love playing on grass, which is quite handy if you are playing at a top tournament such as Wimbledon.
Dinara Safina on the other hand although Ranked world No1, has never won a Grand Slam, has played with varying standards throughout this tournament, with her Quarter final win not being entirely convincing taking 3 sets and she got into the finals by pure luck, and even she admitted she wasn’t at her best there, and to top it all she openly admits, she’s not all that keen on playing on grass. Put these two into a semi final and the results are very predictable. Venus with her power serves, superb volleys, net drop overs, superior court coverage from front to back, and side to side in the blink of an eye, amazing backhand, ability to sustain a lengthy rallye with ease, and sheer gymnastic ability and acrobatics that have to be seen to be believed and thats with a knee support, and Safina has got her hands very very full indeed.
Coupled with the mindset of Venus Williams verging on a type of invincible top down sort of game play coupled with her love affair with the grass surface, versus Dinara Safina’s view, with a slightly shaky mindset under extreme pressure and a definite non love affair with the grass surface and its unpredictable bounce and movement qualities, and again its an uphill battle for Safina.
Needless to say the outcome was a straight 2 sets win for Venus, with a match time of 51 minutes and a score of 6-1, 6-0. It really does not get any more convincing than that and is a very similar outcome to what happened in the French Open 2009 for Safina a few weeks back. Safina has quite a lead over the Williams sisters in World Ranking points but we are not sure it is enough to guarantee her No1 Status after this grand slam event.
Semi Final No2 Serena Williams v Elena Dementieva Match Details.

Very different match here altogether. Pre match interviews have quoted Serena saying she is not as confident as her sister in this semi final and is slightly wary of Dementieva and with good reason. Dementieva is Ranked world no4 similar build to Venus Williams, she can cover a court and can handle power players like Serena in a controlled manner and can go the full distance with such players and match them point for point. Her strongest quality is her ability to return power serves and return them well to catch her opponent out. Power serves of well over 100mph+ that are capable of pulling rackets out of hands at worst and causing serious injuries, and at best leave the opponent hopelessly unable to return the shot in any sort of controlled manner do not phase the likes of Dementieva and Serena is wary of such a player as this is one of her key weapons! Serena Williams Ranked world no2 has had a mixed season, winning early on in the season but sustaining an injury prior to the French Open and Wimbledon but which has cleared up and is clearly not affecting game play. Serena with her stockier build is not quite as gymnastic as Serena but is built for power and endurance and is able to play well on grass but prefers the hard man made and clay surfaces that suit her style of play better.
This was a more even match in terms of mindset and ability and Dementieva put up a superb fight and with such an even match the outcome was a probable long drawn out one which turned out to be the case.
The entire match under sweltering heat lasted a massive three hours with the final score being 6-7 (4), 7-5, 8-6, at one stage it was looking Dementieva could have won, but Serena came back to claim victory. Not as a convincing a win as the Venus v Dinara match, based on this semi final match analysis it looks like Venus may steal the day in the finals based on current form.
The Wimbledon 2009 Women’s final of Venus Williams v Serena Williams will be played on Saturday 4 July a very appropriate day as its American Independence Day.
