Kuznetsova beats Safina to claim French Open 2009 victory!

This was an all Russian Womens French Open 2009 Tennis Final so either way Russia was going to claim victory, but World No7 Svetlana Kuznetsova was the better player in the final on the day and her cool head under pressure beat a very nervous World Ranked No1 Dinara Safina 6-4 6-2 in 74 minutes. Not exactly a walkover in time terms but the scores in 2 straight sets show the standard of Kuznetsova under finals pressure, thats what counts at the end, Â and she claims the title fair and square.

An emotional moment for Dinara as she wanted to win this so badly, and Kuznetsova was aware of this and shared the moment with Dinara at the net, before walking away and acknowledging the crowd in her victory. This site was quietly rooting for Safina, Â and it would have been her first Grand Slam victory instead Kuznetsova adds the French Open 2009 to make it a second Grand Slam win made all the more sweet by beating the worlds No1 ranked women’s tennis player.

On points nothing much changes as regards World Ranking as far as we can work out, Kuznetsova will move from 7 to inside probably the Top 5 maybe even the Top 3 but second place in the French Open to Safina, finishing way ahead of Serena Williams who is currently ranked the world no2, meansÂ Safina’s lead in theory could be extended. The new positions when released will be here as they form the seeding for the next Grand slam which is Wimbledon, now only weeks away!

Kuznetsova is one to watch, looking at photos of her in action she looks similar to Serena Williams in build and is formidable, although clay and grass surfaces are too very different animals indeed!
