Dinara Safina of Russia has reached the Grand Slam final that is the French Open 2009 at Roland Garros in Paris where she won 6-3, 6-3 over No. 19-ranked Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia,  who experienced her first-time as a Grand Slam semifinalist at this event.

Svetlana Kuznetsova (photo below) also from Russia, currently the World No7, who knocked out the World No2 Serena Williams  a day earlier has also made it through to the final  in a long battle with the finishing score being  6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3 against the World  No. 32 Samantha Stosur, Australian player and the first Australian women’s  semifinalist in 21 years.

2009 French Open - Day Twelve
Safina has been World No1 for a few weeks now, there have been some doubters within tennis circles whether she will stay there considering the present company she is in, currently in the top 5,  and has this to say about her current ranked position:

“Well, I think since I became No. 1, I’m playing finals and winning the titles” — in Rome and Madrid — “so how much more proof I need to give the people that I think I deserve that spot?”.

If she wins this French Open there is no further proof required as far as we see it.  Even if she loses with Kuznetsova ranked world No7 and a French Open win from her, it is still looking probable that heading into Wimbledon Dinara Safina will still be ranked world No1 on points. On form she has recently won at Madrid and convinicingly, on the same surface as in clay and reached the finals of the French Open in 2008 only to be beaten by Ana Ivanovic who is now currently out of the tournament. She has been quoted by the media as saying “she really wants to win this” and with that sort of mindset 2009 could prove to be her year for that coveted French Open win but we think Kuznetsova will give her a run for her money and could surprise!

The French Open Final takes place on Saturday 6 June 09
