Maria Sharapova is staging a brilliant comeback as the former World No1 has now made it into the quarter finals beating 25th-seeded Na Li with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 win.  Sharapova will  meet Cibulkova  in the quarter finals in what promises to look an interesting match.

The big upset was Ana Ivanovic who lost in the 4th Round to  ninth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who barged past Ivanovic, 6-2, 6-3, in a rapid fire  55-minute game. Ana Ivanovic won the French Open in 2008!

Ivanovic said “I started really well, and I felt really good in the beginning. Then after the third game, actually after first point in the fourth game, I just suddenly started feeling so dizzy, and I completely lost my balance.”

2009 French Open - Day Eight
Serena Williams is coming back into serious form after her serious leg injury hampered play in previous tournaments and the World No2 is into the French Open quarter-finals after overwhelming Canadian 24th seed Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1, 6-2 in a one-sided match which lasted just 53 minutes.

The 23-year-old Russian Dinara Safina and current World no 1 demolished the challenge of France’s Aravane Rezai 6-1, 6-0 in the centre-court which ensured a place for Safina in the quarter finals.

Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) also beat  Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 and No. 20-seeded Dominika Cibulkova bested Agnes Szavay 6-2, 6-4.
