A highly respected and award winning actress, an actress we take very seriously here, her movements and choice of film roles always  generate interest and add considerable weight to any production. We would hazard a guess and say other actresses also watch her movements with even greater interest, such is her calibre!

UPI POY 2008 - Entertainment

With her more notable films including  “The Lord of the Rings Trilogy” where she played Galadriel, The Aviator where she won an academy award for Best Supporting actress, her superb performance in the period drama Elizabeth, and more recently ”Notes on a Scandal” with Dame Judi Dench and  ”The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” starring alongside Brad Pitt, she also has a strong interest in the theatre both in production and on stage.

News wise things have quietened down in the Blanchett camp since the release of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. We thought we  would see what she has been up to, see what projects, public engagements/events and  new productions she is or has been involved in recently , something we will be doing increasingly with a lot of bigger name stars that are between projects.

Film wise she is set to play Maid Marian in “The Sheriff of Nottingham” which was confirmed earlier this month, a Robin Hood remake that is set to star Russell Crowe as the actual Sheriff of Nottingham, and there has been a heavyweight recent addition Vanessa Redgrave, mother of the recently deceased Natasha Richardson, and Redgrave is set to play Queen Eleanor of Aquitane. This now looks to have some serious backing and things look set to move forward.

This production has experienced no end of problems, similar to another production called “Salt” now starring Angelina Jolie which looks to have found some direction and is underway in earnest. Maid Marian we recollect was originally to be played by Sienna Miller who according to some media sources walked off the set in January and has now been replaced by Blanchett.

It will be interesting to see if Blanchett stays the course as the Director of this production from what we have heard is very demanding and wants things “spot on” and nothing less, but then most Directors are like this? Filming for the Sheriff of Nottingham looks now set to recommence very soon after lengthy delays and is rumoured to take place “somewhere” in Pembrokeshire, this is as yet to be confirmed.

The War Of The Roses - Opening Night

She was recently involved in the launch of the David Williamson Biography, called Behind the scenes” the famous Australian playwright who stated it was something that he was not keen to write, and the task was handed to Kristin Williamson his wife. Blanchett is co artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, is Australian by birth (Melbourne) and is a keen and talented thespian something that underpins her outstanding acting in every film she appears in. Hence her appearance at the event, where she was nominated to speak.

Blanchett is also to appear in voice form in a new Disney Anime production by the famous director Hayao Miyazaki  called “Ponyo on a cliff by the sea”  featuring other star voices including Matt Damon, Noah Cyrus (Miley Cyrus’s younger sister), Frankie Jonas,  Tina Fey, Lily Tomlin, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, and Betty White. The Japanese original  version was released last year and the English version looks set to be released some time in August 2009. The English version will go by the easier name of “Ponyo”.

Cate Blanchett in summary is very much still “booked up” for ongoing projects, “The Sheriff of Nottingham” film production is of particular interest, any available production/on set/filming footage and news will be here if available!
