Pink has got a new single out, it has been out a few weeks on You Tube, seems to be causing a bit of a stir over there, and we thought it might be a good idea to take a closer look and have it over here, put it through its paces, give it a grilling and see how it comes out at the other end!

Stella McCartney: Paris Fashion Week Ready-to-Wear A/W 09
We have a lot of respect for Pink, there’s a lot of talent here and she has that “I’m fun but don’t mess me” air about her that we love. She can be sophisticated one week as she showed at the Paris Fashion Week (see photo above)  and outrageous the next as her album cover, videos and live performances show, and everything in between.

She’s smart, attractive, sharp, confident and capable and not afraid to push boundaries. She has matured from her earlier pink haired beginnings but Pink is still very very much PINK. This new offering is off her new album “Funhouse” which is not so new now, and is the follow up to “Sober” and is starting to join a long line of hits coming off this album.

Verdict:

There are some strange goings on when we review music and videos but one paramater we always use, which is also true in life is the  ”first impressions last”. When applied to music and music videos we call it the “20 second rule” .  Watch and listen to the first 20 seconds and then just cut, and an experienced listener can grade the song from that piece alone and 9 times out of 10 it will be right, but of course there are exceptions.

Pink and her new song “Please Don’t Leave Me” is a case in point, 20 seconds in and we have our rating and we listened to the whole song and that rating did not change. First off the song, good intro, good lyrics, and we love the guitar rift that underpins the whole song, they are really stretching those strings here, real 3D stuff, and we are pro guitar, decent vocals with some on purpose gravelly vocal stretches adding some menace to the proceedings, this is a classy and earthy and slightly scary number, and ticks all the right technical boxes. Repetition is limited although it is there, and the song length is spot on.

On to the video, its menacing, Pink is a bit scary, its clever, gripping, fits the title and song and adds another dimension, again something that has had a lot of thought and effort put into it, and it shows. If anybody has seen the film “Misery” based on the Stephen King book, this video is a re-enactment of that very film. Near the end when she comes with the axe again this is classic Stephen King this time it is the film “The Shining” that starred Jack Nicholson. Clever stuff, although we have marked down ever so slighlty as it is not an original idea!

Ratings wise we really like the video and we rate as 4 stars, the song we like and we rate as 3 and half stars. Total Rating 3 and half stars++++++++++++++ a quality number and should do well, only thing that will hamper its success is the album has been out a while now, most people have it and this could affect dowloads/sales but we think it will do well none the less. We hope it does !
