Jennifer Hudson and the 40th NAACP Awards, Los Angeles

The NAACP Awards is a big event now in its 40th year and was held last night in the Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles and there was a strong  A List turnout  at this event with big names such as Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Halle Berry, Rosario Dawson, Dakota Fanning, Will Smith, Stevie Wonder  and also the heavyweight boxing legend Muhammad Ali amongst many others. Noticeable by their absence were Rihanna and Chris Brown and no awards for guessing why they did not attend after the recent headlines surrounding these two stars.

40th NAACP Image Awards - Show

The NAACP Image Awards is an award presented annually by the American National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to honor outstanding people of color in film, television, music, and literature.

Similar to other awards, like the Oscars and the Grammys, the 35 categories of Image Awards are voted on by members of the NAACP. There are also honorary awards, including the President’s Award, the Chairman’s Award, Entertainer of the Year and The Image Award Hall of Fame.

The awards were first presented in 1969. The awards series, normally broadcast with tape delay and aired by Fox Network, was broadcast live for the first time in 2007 for the 38th edition of the awards show. It was first nationally televised in 1974.

The Awards:

The Awards were presented by Halle Berry (above) and she managed four costume changes in one night and also co presented by Tyler Perry.

Jennifer Hudson (above) mopped up the gongs at this award ceremony and came out on top with 3 awards including;

Outstanding new artist.
Best album for her self-titled debut.
Best collaboration for I’m His Only Woman, sung with fellow Idol alum Fantasia.

Beyonce (above) managed to win the Best Female Artist Award and Jamie Foxx won best male artist.
